Wellington, New Zealand: 2008

Crossing the ditch this year, Once Upon a Deadline was the opening event for the New Zealand Post Writers and Readers Week at the 2008 New Zealand International Arts Festival. The accents were a bit different - as were the themes our writers chose to pursue - but the spirit was the same.

Six writers traversed the windy city of Wellington finding inspiration at a local animal shelter, the iconic Bucket Fountain, even stopping off at the Beehive (known by the politically inclined as Parliament).

The Judges Prize was awarded David Geary, playwright and 2008 Writer in Residence at Victoria University. Eleanor Catton took home the audience’s choice award.
